3 Ways to Support Muslim Students Observing Ramadan

Many religions around the world call on followers to observe times of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Currently, Ramadan is being observed by Muslims and below you will find information about Ramadan 2021 and some strategies for supporting your Muslim students.

  1. Share with your students that Ramadan has begun and students observing are welcome to inform you privately. Do not ask students to claim their religious identity in front of others, but do let them know you support them and are willing to accommodate their observance.

  2. Consider offering temporary adjustments or accommodations for those observing Ramadan. Many individuals observing Ramadan will become more active at night than during the day because of depleted energy levels from fasting. Being flexible with your students can be discussed privately and adjusted to best support the individual.

    1. Adjust expectation for participation grades or allow students to participate more through the learning platform or during the live session, depending on when they have the most energy.

    2. Offer assignment extensions if students are praying or gathering with family during pre-existing deadlines.

    3. Allow students to attend live sessions off camera if they are too weak to be upright, or remind them of the live session recordings if they would like to view them.

  3. Refrain from eating or drinking on camera. Ask your students to eat or drink before class and not during class. If this is something a student cannot do, ask them to ensure their camera is off when they eat or drink.

While the strategies listed above are immediately applicable during Ramadan, they may also be applied during any religious observance requiring fasting.
