Within the EdTech industry, articles often emphasize practical teaching strategies for AI, guiding educators on its effective integration into the classroom. However, there is a delightful, unexplored dimension that goes beyond the conventional—using AI as a catalyst for creativity and novel learning experiences. In this narrative, we will venture into the playful side of AI, showcasing how it can be a source of inspiration, foster creativity, and in this case, spark engaging discussions on ethical considerations.
Recently, my girlfriend and I stumbled upon Dr. Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal, a satirical piece critiquing the ruling class of its time. Intrigued, we decided to experiment with Ask AI (powered by Chat GPT and GPT-4) to modernize this 300-year-old work, turning it into a fun and lighthearted exploration.
Our first attempt resulted in a serious, un-satirical piece on societal issues. Even when we asked the AI to be "meaner," it insisted on maintaining positive and respectful content. However, a quick shift in our request to create a satire in the style of Swift's A Modest Proposal lent to an amusing response that highlighted the importance of ethical considerations.
We continued our playful interaction with the AI, prompting it to tackle the peculiar side effect of social media: parents pushing their children into content creation for financial gain. The resulting piece humorously proposed embracing the exploitation of children as content creators in the digital age. The entire conversation can be read here!
Our conversation with Ask AI was not only entertaining but also served as a reminder that technology, including AI, can be a source of fun and connection. AI's willingness to play along, and even inject humor into its responses, demonstrated a more approachable side of these advanced technologies.
Reflecting on this experience brought me back to my teenage years when chatbot apps like SimSimi provided endless entertainment. The rudimentary yet amusing interactions with SimSimi, where I would often try to provoke it for laughs, highlighted the joy that technology can bring. SimSimi still works today in 2023, but it has not progressed much past where it started.
In the midst of discussions about the impact of AI on human development and the job market, it is essential to acknowledge the lighter side of technology. For educators, this journey into AI experimentation could spark curiosity in the classroom, inspiring novel assignments and learning experiences for students. Imagine the potential for students to explore the creative possibilities of AI, crafting satirical pieces or engaging in conversations with AI to understand its capabilities and ethical considerations.
As we navigate this tech-led world, let us not forget the sheer fun and fascination that new technologies can offer, reminiscent of the captivation 14-year-old me would have felt with the tools and advancements available today.
