5 Small Group Icebreakers

With these 5 small group icebreakers you can facilitate your students’ rapport building and connection with one another. Before implementing any of these activities, here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

  1. Model the activity with your own response!

  2. KISS! (Keep it short and simple) - Have students respond to the prompt in small groups of up to 3 for up to 5 minutes. Encourage them to identify any commonalities and ask follow-up questions. If time permits, spend another 5 minutes in the whole group inviting a few groups to share uncovered points of interest.

  3. Tell students the learning purpose of the icebreaker.
