3 Generative AI Tools to Harness for Success

There is no doubt that AI is the latest topic to be making headlines in the education community. Oftentimes when a new trend emerges in the education space, there is resistance to change. Rightfully so, many educators are focused on the effects that AI will have on student submissions and plagiarism. There are already many tools being developed to combat student misuse of AI to claim work as their own.

Think of the first time calculators were introduced into the field of math. Many of the same questions we are asking about AI now were being asked of the education community then: the effects it has on the students with their learning and the effects it has on educators with their teaching.

ChatGPT is the most commonly referred to AI tool that students are using but many others are an untapped resource for educators. Here, I will go over three different AI tools to add to your repertoire for the upcoming term. Keep in mind that many generative AI tools are gated with a subscription service and will gate you with “credits” as a limit on how many things you can produce.

Tome.app

Tome.app is an AI-assisted presentation/website creation tool for faculty and students alike. Whether you are looking to create a specific presentation, portfolio or website, it has plenty of templates to choose from. Just like any other AI tools. With one prompt, it can autogenerate an entire presentation/website for you that is editable after the fact. The image below shows just some of the examples of templates available for you to use as a foundation to your new resource.

HeyGen

HeyGen is a generative-AI tool that focuses on video creation. It allows you to create a template of your voice and facial expressions by speaking into your camera for 30 seconds to two minutes, and then it will allow you to use that template to input any type of script that you would like to create a video. These features can be particularly useful for educators trying to create additional lecture/informational videos surrounding new topics without having to physically record themselves creating these clips to post on your digital campus. You can also use AI to create an avatar that reads these scripts for you if you are uncomfortable with yourself appearing in these videos.

You can also create avatars and use any of the templates already provided to get a headstart.

Perplexity.AI Perplexity.ai works similarly to ChatGPT as a text-to-text generative AI tool. The upgrade over ChatGPT is because perplexity uses a newer database, so that the answers generated are more up-to-date versus ChatGPT. The more specific your prompts are, the better the return on the text answers will be. If you are having trouble using this tool, think about creating prompts that are very specific.

Perplexity also allows you to integrate Copilot, which is Microsoft's AI into the field of search as well.

Some ways in which you can utilize Perplexity to help with your instruction:

  • Icebreaker ideas

  • Coming up with discussion questions

  • Outlining a lesson plan for your live sessions

  • Generating code

  • Helping with APA/MLA formatting questions.
