Getting the Band Back Together: Using Music to Build Community

Did you know that the letter “a” produces seven different sounds? Many years ago, I pursued a career in teaching English as a second language to adult learners in New York City. As my first teaching assignment, I was tasked to teach my beginner-level English learners about pronunciation. For non-native speakers of English, the way to learn pronunciation is through listening intently and through ‘practice, practice, practice’! To liven up the classroom on a Monday morning and to shed some pop culture knowledge, I had Michael Jackson’s song, “Bad” playing as my students trickled in to find their seats. We were going to learn how to pronounce the letter “a” that morning. If you’ve ever heard this song before, the word “bad” is used 48 times. That’s 48 chances to practice! Introducing Gwen Pelfini: Adjunct Professor at NYU, and certified Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Provider. Gwen is an integrative, multi-licensed psychotherapist, adjunct professor, clinical supervisor and certified psychedelic-assisted therapy provider and advocate, who is passionate about curating spaces for access and conversation in the community. Through her warm and direct approach, she has made it her life’s work to help people connect with their own Inner Healing Intelligence and live a meaningful life. She has honed her expertise in the field through a multitude of educational experiences, including training from UCLA, NYU and various mental health settings and institutes. Using Alt Text to Create Inclusive Course Content

Alt text is one way to make your course content more accessible to all learners, particularly those with visual impairments or those using screen readers to comprehend and engage with the content. Alt text, short for alternative text, is a written description that provides information about the content and function of an image on a webpage. This text is typically embedded in the HTML code and serves as a substitute for images when they cannot be displayed or when a learner is utilizing assistive technologies like screen readers. All 2U/edX platforms support the inclusion of alt text for images placed in courses. Below are 4 strategies to help you write more effective alt text. Be Descriptive and Concise Alt text should provide a succinct and accurate description of the image. Focus on conveying the essential information without being overly verbose. New Advances in Polling

Polling has been an option in Zoom for as long as we have utilized it as our live session platform. However, up until now, Zoom polling required the facilitator to populate all answer choices. While this works perfectly for a quick pulse check or even quiz practice, Zoom’s advanced polling options now allow for students to generate their own answers. Zoom’s newest feature of Advanced Polling contains Single Choice, Multiple Choice, Matching, Rank Order, Short Answer, and Long Answer. Each of these options lends itself to a different type of response from your students, encouraging all to engage in class.
