In the digital learning space, student engagement can look different than it did. However, student engagement is just as important if not more important in the digital learning space to ensure that your students stay engaged during live sessions instead of playing with their pets or scrolling through the internet. A strong strategy for keeping your students engaged is incorporating low-risk engagement strategies throughout your sessions and changing them up often. Low-risk engagement activities allow your students to engage with each other or course content in a manner that has a low impact on how their instructor or peers view them.
Consider the following low-risk engagement strategies:
- Polls: Student answers are anonymous, instructors can see how many students have responded, and results can be shared with the whole class for engaging discussions.
- Breakout Rooms: Students are able to discuss content with a small group of peers rather than the whole group which can feel less risky.
- Jamboards (third party tool powered by Google): Students are able to complete work individually or in a small group and see what their peers are doing if they need guidance.
- Skeleton Handouts: Support students in actively taking notes during live sessions based on the “skeleton” or outline that was in the handout.
- Personal Reflection: Allows students to reflect on their content knowledge without the pressure of their peers having to see it.
